about this book

In Lakesedge, Violeta Graceling and her brother Arien arrive at a haunted estate, expecting to face the feared Rowan Sylvanan. Rumored to have drowned his family, Rowan is more complicated than the monster stories suggest. As Leta uncovers his tragic past, she is drawn to both him and the mysterious Lord Under, the death god lurking in the lake. To save them, she must confront her own dark past. This atmospheric story blends romance and gothic elements, where love and danger intertwine.

my thoughts

This was my book choice for week one of my October Reading Challenge and it did not disappoint! Lakesedge captivated me with its rich, gothic atmosphere and compelling characters. From the moment Violeta “Leta” Graceling arrives at the haunted Lakesedge estate with her brother, I was drawn into a world where secrets lurk beneath the surface, and nothing is quite as it seems. The blend of dark fantasy and emotional depth kept me turning the pages, especially as Leta’s protective instincts for her brother shine through in a place filled with both danger and mystery.

The Monster of Lakesedge is a boy with long dark hair and a sharp, beautiful face. And somehow that makes all of this so much worse.

characters and development

Leta is a strong-willed protagonist, fiercely loyal to her family and unafraid to confront the mysterious Rowan Sylvanan. From the start, her protective instincts for her younger brother, Arien, drive her choices, showcasing a deep sense of responsibility. She is not only brave but also resourceful, determined to uncover the truth behind the haunted Lakesedge estate. As she faces danger, her journey becomes one of self-discovery, forcing her to confront both external horrors and her growing feelings for Rowan. Her emotional awakening is beautifully written as she struggles with vulnerability, love, and fear in a world of shadows.

Rowan is a character defined by tragedy. Seen as a monster for drowning his family as a child, he carries deep guilt and isolation. Burdened by his past, he builds emotional walls, choosing solitude and embracing his dark reputation. Yet, as Leta uncovers the truth about him, we see a boy longing for connection and understanding. His trauma adds emotional depth, making him both compelling and sympathetic.

Leta and Rowan’s evolving relationship transforms them both. Leta challenges her views on what makes a monster, while Rowan slowly lowers his guard, revealing his true self. Their growth is profound, reshaping their perceptions as they face the darkness together.

pacing & plot

The pacing in Lakesedge felt well-balanced, never dragging and keeping my attention from the very first page. Each chapter builds momentum, blending tension and introspection to keep the story engaging. As the plot unfolds, Leta’s interactions with Rowan and the sinister Lord Under create growing tension that drives the narrative forward. Their relationship is filled with danger and discovery, keeping readers intrigued as they unravel the mysteries of the lake and estate.

The latter part of the book stood out, with higher stakes as they fight to cure the estate’s poison. The urgency adds intensity, making it impossible to put down as their fates intertwine with dark forces. The unexpected cliffhanger left me stunned, hinting at possible love triangle dynamics that could complicate the story. Just as I thought I understood the characters’ paths, the plot took an unexpected turn, opening new conflicts and romantic possibilities. The pacing enhances both suspense and emotion, making Lakesedge an unforgettable read.

I walked into the shadows. I came into the dark. I chose this, and I am not afraid.

themes & emotional impacts

The story explores family, sacrifice, and what it means to be a monster. Leta’s protectiveness shows how far we go for family. Rowan’s struggles highlight how trauma shapes identity, while the Lord Under reminds us that bargains always have consequences. As the stakes rise, sacrifices become inevitable, forcing characters to face their fates. Love amidst darkness adds emotional depth, especially as Leta experiences feelings she’s never faced before.

final thoughts

All in all, Lakesedge is a fantastic mix of gothic romance and dark fantasy that kept me turning pages late into the night. Clipstone really knows how to draw you into a world filled with mystery and rich characters. I’m so excited to see where Leta and Rowan’s story goes next! If you’re into tales that balance intrigue with emotional depth, definitely give this one a read—you won’t regret it! If you have read this one, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
